Zenonym Research

An independent technical publication focused on privacy, security, Linux hardening, networking and self-hosting. Guides are verified through hands-on testing before publication.

Focus Areas

  • Linux Hardening & Kernel Security: Sysctl tuning, module blacklisting, AppArmor/SELinux enforcement, and service hardening.
  • Network Privacy & Encryption: DNS-over-HTTPS, DNS-over-TLS, WireGuard, Tor, and traffic isolation techniques.
  • Encrypted Communication: Signal, Session, Matrix/Element configuration, cross-signing, and key backup strategies.
  • Device Security: Mobile (GrapheneOS, Pixel), desktop (Ubuntu, Debian), and server hardening.

Testing Environment

All guides are validated through three stages before publication:

  1. Implementation: Configurations applied in test environments running Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Debian 12, GrapheneOS, and Raspberry Pi.
  2. Functional Verification: Confirmed through testing — Tor circuits building, DNS leaks blocked, firewalls passing port scans, and encrypted volumes unlocking correctly.
  3. Persistence Testing: After a reboot, verified that all settings persist and no fallback routes are exposed.

Methodology

Every article follows these principles:

  • Original Experience: Guides are based on hands-on testing, not theoretical configuration. We include terminal output and observed behavior.
  • No AI-Generated Content: All articles are written and reviewed by human researchers. No article is published without human author review.
  • Transparency: We disclose limitations, known risks, and trade-offs. If a tool has a privacy quirk, we say so.
  • Accuracy: Claims are verifiable with citations to RFCs, NIST guidelines, project documentation, and CVE databases.

Update History

Software changes. Security recommendations evolve. Every guide displays its Last Updated date, and we review quarterly for outdated commands, deprecated tools, or new vulnerabilities. Major OS releases trigger a re-test within 30 days.

How We Choose Topics

Article ideas come from three sources:

  • Testing: When we run into a non-obvious configuration issue, we write a guide.
  • Reader Feedback: Technical questions via our Contact page drive new content.
  • Emerging Threats: New privacy tools and threats in the open-source community.
